HTML 5 and Smartbuilder v4

Postby Nav » Thu Dec 08, 2011 7:08 pm

Hello everyone,
There have been a number of questions regarding HTML5 recently. Being able to output to HTML5 is a very high priority for version 4 of SmartBuilder. Regarding timing, we don’t have a release date. As you may be aware, the HTML5 standard is still in flux and browser support is limited. Here’s a good summary of where browsers are on support for HTML5 (from “At the moment the only HTML5 browser that is going to get you very far is Google Chrome and until browsers catch up with the newer language it is probably a good idea to use it sparingly in your designs until it actually is a true and tested standard.”

While Flash is declining in favor of HTML5, we believe desktop/notebook browsers will be able to run Flash for many years to come. We believe that our development of SmartBuilder v4 and the stabilization and adoption of HTML5 should come together fairly well from a timing perspective.

For mobile deployment of SmartBuilder content, lessons will play on newer Android devices (pls. see this post for technical details). For iPads, we have found a browser that can be purchased for $4.99 from the Apple App Store called Photon which enables iPad users to play Flash content. We have tested this with several SmartBuilder lessons and they play well. This is not a full long-term solution for iPads, but does provide a partial iPad solution in the short to medium term while we are developing version 4. We will update this post soon with more details on how to use the Photon browser for viewing SB content on iPads.

Thanks, and as always, Happy Authoring!

Here are some other browsers that enable Flash support on the iPad.

So far, from what I've heard, iSWiFTER (free) and Puffin ($0.99) are the best low-cost options.

Skyfire and Photon would be the highest rated (and most expensive options.)

If you play around with these different browsers, please post here to let the community know what you think.

◦Diigo Browser (free) – Chrome-like, with annotation and offline reading (formerly iChromy) -
◦iSWiFTER (Free) -
◦Atomic Web Browser ($0.99) – Browse FullScreen w/ Download Manager & Dropbox -
◦Cloud Browse ($2.99) -
◦iCab Mobile (Web Browser) ($1.99) -
◦Grazing Web Browser ($1.99) -
◦Skyfire Web Browser ($4.99) - and $2.99 for the iPhone.
◦Puffin Web Browser ($0.99) -
◦Opera Mini Web browser (free) -
